Time for Christmas

Christmas break (yes, I choose to use the word Christmas) is almost here and I want to wish all staff and students a restful holiday. Good luck to the basketball and wrestling teams as they will continue to practice and play during the break.

Brian Jacques 1939-2011

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Brian Jacques.  He wrote the Redwall books and has been one of my favorite authors for many years. He wrote fantasy/adventure stories that not only entertained but also taught lessons in friendship, honor and standing up for the rights of all.  Although he is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in the great stories he created.

Reflections on the first semester

As the first semester (my first semester at DNHS) comes to a close I think back on all that has happened these last few months. Coming to the high school library opened a new chapter in my life. It had been 9 years since I had last worked in a school setting, not to mention never having worked with high school students; I felt just a bit rusty. But staff and students were all so welcoming that I settled in quickly. Not content to just keep the status quo, I jumped right into the business of making Del Norte High's library a place where all felt welcome. We now have a full lab, comfortable seating, a new arrangement for fiction titles and there is still more to come. We are planning to add a projector and computer, re-think the floor plan, and modernize the decor. The library is a place for learning, bonding, gaming, studying, making new friends and appreciating the diversity of our student population.

Swift Rally at DNHS

Yesterday I was treated to some wonderful performances by DNHS students. Students used guitars, song, and poetry to share a special story. As much as I enjoy today's music, I believe that nothing compares to the power and beauty of the songs from the great crooners like Sinatra, Bennett, and Martin (Frank, Tony and Dean). Matt's rendition of "Fly me to the moon" made my heart sing and my toes tap, it was great fun to listen to.The depth of the original poetry shared by students left me wanting more; and I am now determined to host an "Open Mic" event in the library.

Current Reading List

I am reading The Sable Quean by Brian Jacques.  It is another exciting story in the Redwall series, all of which I highly recommend if you love animal or fantasy stories.  I would like to know what other people are reading. Post to the blog and share your favorite book or even author.

The beginning

This is the first official posting on the library blog. Being new to this world of Web 2.0 I am unsure of where to begin. I hope people enjoy visiting and take the time to look around, answer the survey and check out the slide show.
